SACO – Hockey is a fast-paced competitive sport and at Thornton Academy, the players are willing to get to the rink early in the morning, late at night, or any time they have a chance to skate together.
“From the time I was little, hockey was my sport,” said Garon Woods, a senior on the TA team.
At the end of his junior season, Woods dyed his naturally dark hair blond for the playoffs. Strikingly, he chose to leave his beard its natural color.
“The team is like a big happy family and despite all the work, we continue to have lots of fun,” Woods said. At the encouragement of his teammates, Woods entered a contest at ESPN for the worst hockey hair. “I thought it was kind of a joke,” Woods said. “I never expected to hear from them or win.”
The national sports media company notified him that he won second place in their contest. His picture was published on the SportsCenter story that was sent out using the social media app SnapChat. Within a day, his photo was available to millions of users.
It is a tradition for Thornton hockey players to do something creative with their hair during a playoff run. Who knows what he and the rest of the team might do this year.
